Checklists to organize my work

We use a metacognitive and “coaching” approach with clients, which entails “thinking about their thinking,” to first better understand how their brains work.  Self-reflection and cognitive-based discussions occur regularly in sessions.  Topics covered include, but are not limited to: frontal lobe development, managing our “lizard” brain, self-monitoring attention and understanding distractions, identifying and using a consistent planning tool, goal setting, internal and external memory strategies, using a structured approach to task and time management, and most importantly, building routines.  These services are offered with a trained Speech-Language Pathologist and/or Educational Psychologist.

The following is a checklist of milestones and areas of improvement for each client:

  • Use of a planning tool with increased consistency

  • Establishment of daily routines for home and academic-based tasks

  • Skills to break down larger projects/tasks into smaller parts

  • Skills to estimate and set times for tasks more accurately

  • Skills to identify and manage distractions with increased independence

  • Increased independence with managing daily and academic-based activities

  • Increased success and confidence in schoolwork
